Botulinum toxin, often shortened to Botox, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction, thus causing flaccid paralysis. The toxin causes the disease botulism. The toxin is also used commercially for medical and cosmetic purposes.

Anyone can have Botox as long as the consultation process has been completed. There are some obvious reasons why Botox might not be recommended by your aesthetician, such as an active skin infection or certain existing heart conditions. Your aesthetician will discuss risks and benefits during your consultation.
